Product overview
AI Power Tools for Sparx EA lets an AI assistant work directly on a live Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA) repository. This part is the entry point to the reference. It explains what AI Power Tools is, who it is for, what it covers, how a request travels from the assistant to your model, and where the AI decides and where AI Power Tools decides.
What AI Power Tools is
AI Power Tools for Sparx EA has two parts that ship together on one version number, 3.6.4. They are installed separately and updated separately:
| Part | What it is | What it does |
|---|---|---|
The server (ea-mcp-server.exe), the AI Power Tools MCP Server for Sparx EA |
A Windows program the AI assistant calls. It drives Enterprise Architect through EA's own Windows automation interface. For Claude it arrives as the Claude Desktop extension, and for VS Code as the VS Code extension | Offers the assistant 7 tools: six grouped tools (ea_repository, ea_model, ea_diagram, ea_analyze, ea_mdg, ea_validate) that hold 149 named operations between them, plus ping, a health check |
The skills plugin (ai-power-tools) |
A Claude plugin that carries 24 skills and nothing else. You install it once on your Claude account | Each skill is a written playbook that tells the assistant how to do a kind of job well: the build order, the known pitfalls, how to verify, and which skill to use for which task |
An assistant that has both can:
- Read a repository: packages, elements, connectors, diagrams, attributes, operations, tagged values, baselines and the audit trail.
- Write to it: create, update, move and delete content, singly or in bulk; place and style diagram objects; import and export.
- Query it: structured operations for common questions, plus direct database queries when you need them.
- Validate it: run conformance rulesets, audit stereotype and tagged-value usage, and check which modeling-language situation a model is in.
- Render it: return a diagram as an image, export editable Visio, read a diagram or a package as a manifest another tool can redraw it from, write plain-language descriptions into diagrams, and re-render after every change to check the result.
The server runs on the same Windows machine as EA and attaches to the EA instance you already have open. The assistant uses the server together with three other capabilities of the client it runs in: computer use, local code execution and browser control. See Capabilities and surfaces. AI Power Tools is free. It has no license key, no activation, no trial and no telemetry; the only routine network request is a once-a-day check for a newer release. See Security and data handling. The terms of use are in License.
Who it is for
The reference assumes you know Sparx EA. It does not assume you know how AI tool protocols work or how to program.
| Reader | What they use it for | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| EA architect or modeler | Build and maintain model content from source documents; generate diagrams that read as deliberate; clean up a decayed model | ea-modeling, ea-diagram-composition, ea-model-hygiene |
| MDG author or metamodel owner | Work out which modeling-language situation a repository is in; author, build, deploy and prove an MDG Technology | ea-mdg-assess, then ea-mdg-author or ea-mdg-model-build |
| EA administrator or model governance lead | Run conformance rulesets, find ungoverned elements, baseline before risky changes, review what changed and who changed it | ea-validation, ea-change-management |
| Enterprise architecture lead or analyst | Answer stakeholder questions in business language, including what is on a diagram; roll up a portfolio by tagged value; trace dependencies | ea-stakeholder-reporting |
| Data and BI analyst | Build a business layer over a repository, as SQL views or Parquet files, check it against the repository, and put it into Power BI | ea-reporting-database, ea-power-bi |
| Prolaborate administrator | Build and read Prolaborate dashboards, matrices and impact views through its web interface | prol-start-here |
| IT or endpoint deployer | Roll AI Power Tools out to a fleet, pin versions, move machines that used the older skills installer | Deployment packages |
| Support contact or scripting user | Produce a diagnostic report for support; script EA directly when no tool reaches a feature | ea-diagnostic, ea-com |
